Eastern State Penitentiary Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

I visited the Eastern State Penitentiary in the Fall of 2019.  Leaving at about 5 AM from Raleigh, NC, I got there in 7 hours.  This museum of a prison was discovered on Atlas Obscura.  Enjoyed my visit very much. The prison is in downtown Philadelphia and has very high rock walls.  It looks like a fortress. It was abandon for 30+ years before they decided to make a museum out of it.

If my memory serves me correctly, the above 2 photographs are of people murdered by inmates at the prison.

Many parts of the prison are not restored or minimally restored - such as these rooms (above, below).

Above: Guantanamo bay prison cell replica.

Above:  human ingenuity - a radio - believe it capable of transmitting a receiving built by prisoners.

Above: guard tower at corner in wall.

Some asked prisoners for paper airplanes with the result above.

Al Capone stayed in cell above - not your typical cell - Al got special good treatment at prison.

Above and below photos:  drug dealer inmate made prints from magazines and newspapers using hair gel on  bed sheets with the results shown.  Don't think he served time at this prison though.

Above: Jewish synagogue restored.

Above and below - recreation area for prisoners.

Above and below:  Death Row.

Above: green house.

Above: visitation room.

Above and below: Entrance to prison.

Above and below:  outside of prison.

Above and below: Scenes in Philadelphia not far from prison.

Above:  incinerator at prison.

Hope you enjoyed the photos!
